We held an international workshop “the 6th Korea-Japan Workshop on Dark Energy at KMI” starting from 2019/12/3 to 12/5. More than 50 participants from five countries joined the meeting to share recent progress regarding both theoretical and observational aspects, and discuss future directions in this research field. Learn more about the workshop here (http://www.c.phys.nagoya-u.ac.jp/DE2019/).
On November 15, 2019, Nagoya University held a symposium to celebrate the establishment of the Institutes for Advanced Research Excellence (IARE). In October, Nagoya University decided to establish the Institutes for Advanced Research Excellence (IARE) in order to boost basic research. In recognition of its ongoing contribution to basic research excellence at Nagoya University, KMI was selected to be an IARE center, along with the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) and the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR). As an IARE …

Dr. Takeshi Kobayashi is newly assigned to KMI as an assistant professor. Visit his member page for his profile.
A research group including Associate Professor Kazuhiro Nakazawa, of the Kobayashi-Maskawa Institute for the Origin of Particles and the Universe (KMI), Nagoya University, detected a downward burst of gamma rays during lightning discharge with scintillation detectors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station at sea level in Japan. This research was published in Physical Review Letters on August 7, 2019. Although lightning is a familiar natural phenomenon, thunderclouds still hold many mysteries. Terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs), which are …
Prof. Chiho Nonaka, KMI, was selected to commend as a “particularly outstanding female researcher (who not only excels in research achievements and competence but is also expected to play an active role as a university director or manager in the near future)” by the Gender Equality Promotion Expert Committee of Nagoya University. The Commendation of top leaders among female researchers was one of programs of the MEXT’s Diversity Program – support for Female Researchers at Nagoya University. The commendation ceremony …
The Division of Experimental Studies in KMI seeks to fill a full-time, non-tenure-track, designated Associate Professor position. The successful candidate is expected to participate in a flavor physics experiment using a high-energy accelerator, together with researchers at KMI, and also promote collaborative research with other groups in KMI, such as theoretical particle physics. For more details, please read Associate Professor KMI-2019-1
June 21, 2019, Prof. Tom Browder (University of Hawaii) turned over the role of the Belle II spokesperson to Prof. Toru Iijima (Nagoya University, KMI). The Belle II Experiment is an international collaboration of about 1000 physicists and engineers from 26 countries. Together we explore the fundamental secrets of the Universe with the SuperKEKB cutting-edge electron-positron collider and the new Belle II particle detector. I am greatly honored to be elected Spokesperson of this wonderful international team. Our experiment …
A research group including Associate Professor Kazuhiro Nakazawa, KMI, Nagoya University has observed high-energy radiation phenomena coming from thunder-clouds, and found a prolonged steady emission resulted in a short burst of radiation associated with a lightning discharge. The evolution of the phenomena strongly suggests the initial long emission is related with the triggering of the lightning. The research group was performing ground-based gamma-ray observation campaign aiming at winter thunder-clouds in Hokuriku-region. In the work, they observed a minute-long radiation from …
Dr. Kobayashi, the director of KMI, was inaugurated as the honorary director of Nagoya City Science Museum. “I will try my best so that young people are interested in science” says Makoto Kobayashi. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Nagoya City Hall on April 23rd.
