Phenomenological studies of supersymmetry have been around since the early work of Pierre Fayet in the mid 70s. Efforts to use supersymmetry to solve the gauge hierarchy problem were begun in 1980 and finally, supersymmetric grand unified theories have been around since 1981. Much time and effort since then has been spent on developing these theories and, more importantly, searching for SUSY at LEP, at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Still SUSY remains elusive. In this lecture, I will recall some of my early hopes for SUSY and its apparent successes. I will also discuss the evolution of my thinking towards SUSY GUTs, from 4d GUTs to String Theory.
