Abstract:

In this talk I will survey how various physical conjectures, such as the a-theorem, scale vs conformal symmetry, the weak gravity conjecture, can be encoded in properties of the S-matrix for certain effective field theories. Their proof, in this context, is then tied to general features of unitary UV completions and its constraint on the low energy S-matrix. I review cases where such an approach is successful, the remaining challenges, and some unexpected consequences.
