{"id":834,"date":"2012-11-26T16:19:33","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T07:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kmi.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/eng\/seminar\/834\/"},"modified":"2012-11-26T16:19:33","modified_gmt":"2012-11-26T07:19:33","slug":"20121109_g_s_varner","status":"publish","type":"seminar","link":"https:\/\/www.kmi.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/eng\/seminar\/834\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Giga&#8221; Era of Instrumentation at the Discovery Frontier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Future discoveries at the cosmic, energy and intensity frontiers require large arrays of inexpensive, high-performance instrumentation. &nbsp;The electronics of such systems now routinely consist of billions of transistors taking measurements at Giga-Hertz frequencies and transmitting data at Giga-bit\/second rates. &nbsp;Affordable access to these technologies has fuelled this new &#8220;Giga&#8221; Era, which forms the backbone of recent and future discovery experiments.<\/p>\n<p>While the complexity of these devices can seem intimidating, they obey simple physical principles. &nbsp;Understanding how they work and can be used is an increasingly important skill that every experimental scientist should possess.<\/p>\n<p>After an introduction to the history and basic operating principles of these devices, a concrete example of the readout system for the Belle II Time-Of-Propagation detector will be provided.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","tags":[],"seminar_category":[54],"acf":{"s_now_accepting":true,"s_date_order":"2012-11-09 13:30:00","s_date_end":null,"s_date_text":"","s_text":"Gary S.
