While large cosmological simulations can model galaxy formation in detail, their computational cost makes it difficult to generate the large ensembles needed for current and future surveys.<br \/>\nIn this talk, I will present our recent work on using generative models to efficiently construct galaxy populations from dark-matter-only simulations. I will introduce an autoregressive model that generates galaxies conditioned on dark matter halo properties, and also present a diffusion-based approach that goes one step further, generating galaxies directly from three-dimensional dark matter density fields without identifying haloes. Both models are trained on hydrodynamical simulations and reproduce key galaxy statistics and their spatial relation to the underlying dark matter distribution.
