In this talk, I will discuss how cosmological magnetic fields can be used to probe fundamental physics. I will first review the observational status of the magnetic fields in our universe. Next, I will show the need for physics beyond the Standard Model to explain the origin of the magnetic fields, by refuting the long-standing claim that the Weyl anomaly of quantum electrodynamics can produce seed magnetic fields in the early universe. I will then describe efforts to build models of magnetic field generation within beyond-the-Standard-Model physics, as well as the challenges such as the saturation due to the Schwinger process. Finally, I will introduce recent ideas for overcoming the difficulties and obtaining a comprehensive theory of our magnetized universe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","tags":[],"seminar_category":[58],"acf":{"s_now_accepting":true,"s_date_order":"2019-12-11 17:30:00","s_date_end":null,"s_date_text":"","s_text":"Takeshi Kobayashi (KMI, Nagoya University)","s_place":"Lounge in front of ES635 KMI Science Symposia","s_place_other":"","s_categoryother":"","s_poster":"","s_poster2":"","s_slide":""},"yoast_head":"\n
Probing BSM Physics with Cosmological Magnetic Fields - KMI - Nagoya University<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kmi.nagoya-u.ac.jp\/eng\/seminar\/1594\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"en_US\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Probing BSM Physics with Cosmological Magnetic Fields - KMI - Nagoya University\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Cosmological and astrophysical observations over the years have revealed that our universe is magnetized on various length scales.
