Title: The first observation of the PeV energy neutrino events with IceCube

Date & Time: Monday, December 03, 15:00 -

Room: KMI Science Symposia (ES635)

Abstract:
Neutrinos are important probes for exploring the high energy universe. Because of their unique nature, neutrinos are undeflected in the galactic or extra-galactic magnetic fields and unabsorbed in the photon-filled universe. The observation of the high energy neutrinos enable us to point at their origin which is possibly in the deep Universe and thus they may be the missing link between TeV gamma-rays and EeV cosmic-rays. IceCube is a cubic kilo-meter scale, deep-ice Cherenikov-light neutrino detector of which construction was completed by the end of 2010 at the geographical South Pole. In this talk I will present the first results from the fully completed IceCube detector on searches for ultra-high energy neutrinos above PeV energy region with some focus on the observed two cascade-like neutrino events in the PeV energy region.
